Water Damage Phone? Do's and Don'ts (Before You Bring It In)
Last updated on May 8, 2026
Spilled water on your phone? Dropped it in the sink or toilet? Don't panic. Follow these do's and don'ts immediately:
DO's:
- Turn off the phone immediately — do not try to check if it works
- Remove case, SIM card, and any removable parts
- Gently pat dry with a soft cloth (no shaking)
- Bring it to a professional within 24-48 hours for ultrasonic cleaning
DON'Ts:
- Do not charge the phone — this causes short circuits
- Do not press buttons or try to turn it on
- Do not use a hair dryer — heat damages internal components
- Do not put it in rice — rice dust causes more damage and does nothing for corrosion
